After months of teasers, we finally have more information on the highly anticipated Canon EOS R5! During the Canon Virtual Press Conference in April, more specs were released about both the video and stills capabilities of the EOS R5. These details confirm our speculations that, at least on paper, this mirrorless camera will be quite the show stopper!
The most notable and exciting highlight, of course, is the video possibilities. The EOS R5 will be able to record internal, uncropped, RAW 8K at 29.97fps, or uncropped 4K at 119.88 fps in 10-bit 4:2:2 using Canon Log (H.265) or HDR PQ. Along with that, Dual Pixel CMOS AF available in all 8K and 4K modes. This really gives us a good look at what kind of resolution we can anticipate from this camera, as well as the amount of creative freedom this camera will give its users.
To help support the video capabilities of this camera, Canon announced the specifics of the dual card slots. One will support SD UHS-II, as expected, and the other will support CF Express card slot, which was also somewhat expected, but an exciting confirmation. This will be exceptionally helpful when it comes to the video files, especially the 8K RAW.
Previous specifications that are worth re-mentioning would be High-Speed Shooting up to 20 fps with a silent shutter along with Ultra-High-Speed Autofocus. This AF will include Animal Autofocus, a first for Canon, that will be able to track the whole body, face, or eye of cats, dogs, or birds.
Another notable highlight from earlier releases is the EOS R5’s introduction to 5-axis IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization). Although overdue when compared to competitors, it is a warmly welcomed addition. This will be greatly appreciated across the board, as it will enhance the ability to shoot stills as well as reduce camera shake in video. The IBIS will additionally work in combination with the Optical Image Stabilization found in many Canon RF and EF lenses.
Although there are still some missing pieces surrounding this camera such as sensor resolution, weather sealing, potential heating issues and of course, the price, we have enough to be very excited about the Canon EOS R5!
