Ratings and Reviews
An excellent lens
I've had this lens now for a number of years. I bought it at the Camera Store. It's actually the second EF 50mm f/1.4 that I've had from the Camera Store. The first wouldn't focus worth beans on my original 5D. I returned it a week after I bought it, without a problem. The one I've got now is a real gem. I've read all over the net about people who denigrate this lens. They say it's not sharp. They say the focusing is useless. Sure, mine is not sharp at f/1.4. It's kind of hazy. The haze is gone by f/1.6. It's sharp enough at that aperture to count eye lashes in the center of the frame. It gets even better as you stop down, until diffraction limits take over. That passes the sharpness test for me. In fact, it's the sharpest lens that I own. I use this lens for everything. It's great for portraits. It's excellent for landscapes. It fits in any jacket pocket. It focuses quickly, accurately and silently. I have no problems at all with the focusing mechanism. The bokeh is nice. The bokeh is not EF 50mm f/1.2L nice, but it's certainly good. It's similar to the nearly as good EF 85mm f/1.8 USM. I bought this lens to replace my EF 50mm f/1.8 II. I broke this lens when I tripped and bumped it on something. It was a light bump. It snapped like the cheap plastic lens it is. In comparison, the EF 50mm f/1.4 is sharper, has nicer bokeh, focuses much more quietly, and has a much nicer build quality. To me, it's worth the upgrade. If you hadn't guessed, I'm very happy with the lens. It's excellent for the price paid. I'm also very happy that I bought it from this vendor. I returned my first one, and the fellow at the counter said nothing at all. He just reached under the counter and found another one. That's service!
