LEICA OSKAR BARNACK AWARD
Posted January 22, 2009.
The renowned photographic competition, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award will be celebrating its 30th year in 2009. On the occasion of this special jubilee, Leica Camera AG has revised the entry conditions and included numerous changes.
Entries for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award/Newcomers Award 2009 will be accepted as online submissions between 15 January and 1 March 2009.
A Newcomers Award will be incorporated in the competition for the first time. The competition for this award is open to all (prospective) photographers who are aged 25 years and under.
An international jury awards the Leica Oskar Barnack Award / Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award to photographers whose unerring powers of observation capture and express the relationship between man and the environment in the most graphic form in a sequence of up to 12 images. Entry submissions must be a self-contained series of images in which the photographer perceives and documents the interaction between man and the environment with acute vision and contemporary visual style – creative, groundbreaking and unintrusive.
The winner of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award will receive 5,000 euros or, alternatively, Leica camera equipment to the same value. The winner of the Newcomer Award will be awarded 2,500 euros. The prizes will be presented in the course of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie photographic festival held in Arles, France.
All photo series submitted will be displayed in a special online gallery section of the Leica website for a period of time, ending with the request for entries for the new competition. All photographers have the possibility to be displayed in the online gallery under a “nickname”.

All entries for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2009 must be made via the online » Application Form between 15th January and 1st March, 2009.
The “Leica Oskar Barnack Award” competition is open to all professional photographers. To take part, participants must send in a series of photographs taken in 2008 or long-term projects containing at least one photo from 2008.

Photography the Digital Way by Peter Gold MPA

If you can remember, way back in the last millenium, people used film to capture images. One of the film choices available was a film able to record the infrared spectrum. It was sensitive to heat and more specifically, living things including grass, trees, people, animal life, etc. Those areas of the image were more exposed and whiter. Rocks, sky, etc. with no living matter, were less exposed and recorded grey to black. If you’ve seen these images, they would certainly leave an impression. I believe the main reason for the existence of this film was for aerial surveillance. The air force could pinpoint enemy force with the film’s ability to detect warm bodies. They now use satellite surveillance to do the same thing so they don’t need the film either.
The drawback to this film was, because it was sensitive to heat, even when it was still in the package, it could still be fogged by surrounding heat. It had to be stored in the freezer. You had to be very careful when you loaded the film into the camera. You had to be careful not to heat up the camera in the sun or with body heat. Another characteristic of the infrared wavelength is that it focuses at a different point than the visible light spectrum. So you had to focus the camera and then apply an adjustment to the focus the sharpen it up. You couldn’t see the correction but it had to be done.
Anyhow, with the digital revolution, comes the simplified version of infrared photography without these stumbling blocks. When you upgrade your older digital SLR camera body or even a point and shoot camera, recycle it and give it a new life. There is now a company in the U.S. called www.LifePixel.com that can convert that old camera to be a dedicated infrared digital camera. Digital cameras normally have a filter built in to filter out all the infrared light. LifePixel removes the filter and resets the focus to record sharp infrared images. The problems with storing and handling infrared film are now in the past. Just the fun of creating fantastic infrared images remains and being able to review them instantly.
Go to their website and see the infrared samples on display. If you weren’t sure what an infrared image looked like, I’m sure you’ll recognize the effect once you see it.
Until next month………

EOS 5D MarkII Firmware Update Version 1.0.7
Posted January 12, 2009. Filed under Product Announcement.
Firmware v1.0.7 for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II,
Firmware Update Version 1.0.7 improves and mitigates the following two types of image quality phenomena that occur under certain shooting conditions.
- "Black dot" phenomenon (the right side of point light sources become black)
- Vertical banding noise
The information accompanying the new firmware recommends that users of Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) and Picture Style Editor, who shoot on either sRAW1 or sRAW2, should update these applications as well. Canon EOS 5D Mark II photos taken on either sRAW setting with firmware v1.0.7 loaded, and then viewed in DPP or Picture Style Editor, will apparently show a magenta shift in darker areas.
The new software versions - DPP 3.5.2 and Picture Style Editor 1.4.2 for Mac and Windows - correct this, and are available here (follow the link, and then choose your operating system from the pulldown menu). Third party applications that support the EOS 5D Mark II's sRAW formats may also need to be revised if they show the same magenta shift with firmware v1.0.7.
What has changed in Firmware Version 1.0.7?
Why is it required to update the Digital Photo Professional and Picture Style Editor software? |
