When The City isn't Looking - Bill Peters
Posted October 31, 2008. Filed under Photo Exhibit.
Georgia O’Keefe once said, “Nothing is less real than realism… it is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis that we get at the real meaning of things.” Bill Peters, a photographic artist based in Calgary, Canada, studied photography at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. He says, “Sometimes an image strikes me with such force that I stop dead and collide with other pedestrians. When one of my images stops a viewer in the same way – I know I’ve made a connection.” Peters exploits new techniques in archival pigment printing to capture the graphic forms of our cities in a “heightened reality”. . His prints have a scale, vibrancy and impact usually associated with oil paintings. The show includes cities ranging from Montreal and Toronto to San Francisco and Seattle with special emphasis on Calgary. When the City Isn’t Looking is featured at the Gallery of Photographic Arts, Canada Nov. 5th through December 2nd, 2008.
The Gallery of Photographic Arts, Canada is a photographic collective dedicated to the establishment of photography as a collectible art form. We display the work of several, recognized local photographers. Our mission is to advance photography as an art form and to foster understanding and support for those who create, enjoy, and collect photography.

Penny's for Sight
Posted October 21, 2008.
Photography requires one of our most sacred senses, sight! Without sight many of us would be very limited, not being able to utilize photography for expression.
The eventual outcome is blindness for thoes affected with a rare disease called Retina Pigmentosa.
Unfortunately due to the rareity of the disease, a cure has not been discovered. However a specailist in BC has developed a treatment that will slow down the process. All the proceeds from the Pennies for Sight Bucket will go directly towards the treatment expense for people affected in our community.
Bring your coin collection rolled or unrolled, to The Camera Store and support the cause.

2009 Call For Submissions: Our Environment, Tenuous Balance Extended January 3,2009!
Posted October 6, 2008.
Concern over the apparent decline in the health of our environment has increasingly shaped global
consciousness over the last decade. More than ever, our attention has become focused upon climate change, carbon credit off-setting and the world-wide rise in the cost of oil and food production. In the province of Alberta particularly, we are reminded of the tenuous balance between prosperity and responsible stewardship, given our geographical relationship to the production of oil. Our proximity to a number of internationally known and celebrated National Park systems, both in Canada and the USA, further complicates our sense of self as we have become hyper-aware of our position of proctor.
The Bow River valley extends from the pristine parks of the Canadian Rockies to a multitude of
industrial corporate headquarters situated in the near-by city of Calgary. Within this same region sits the
Exposure Calgary Banff Photography Festival, a not-for-profit society that seeks to engage the interest of
the public eye with the aesthetic and cultural value of photography. This year, we would like to feature
photographic works that may initiate an open discussion regarding environmental stewardship in the year
2009. We, in Alberta, are geographically and culturally located within a unique time and place; from such a position, we would like to host an exhibition regarding the challenges and wonders of living within natural and urban environments.
With respect to the above considerations, the Exposure Calgary Banff Photography Festival
invites submissions for a juried exhibition of photo-based art that will address the theme of visual arts and
the environment. The following topics are of particular interest to the selection committee; submissions
should relate to these questions or address the overall theme. How can we explore the theme of
environment through the visual art of photography? As visual artists, how do we navigate our way through the urban and natural places in the world? What effect does our artistic production have upon the natural environment, and what emerging technologies are able to ease the tensions between pollution and
production?

A Success - 2008 Digital Photo Expo
Posted October 6, 2008. Filed under 2008 Digital Photo Expo.
Thank you to all who attended and participated in The Camera Store’s first Digital Photo Expo! We are delighted to have provided a resource epicenter for Western Canada's photographic community. With an estimated 9000 visitors, volunteers and exhibitors in attendance, the walls were bursting with enthusiasm for Calgary's visual arts.
With the success of the 2008 Digital Photo Expo, we are pleased to announce the 2009 Digital Photo Expo. It will be held October 24-25 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Calgary.
We have already received feedback from several of our supporters. Below are just a few of the comments we received regarding the Expo:
"As for the Expo itself, it was terrific. I learned a lot, I spoke with a bunch of talented and knowledgeable people (including a number of folks in your red T-shirts), and I had a lot of fun. It was a very relaxed atmosphere despite there being so many people present, and it was great to buttonhole manufacturers' reps for detailed discussions about their products. The seminar on motor sports alone was worth the admission fee and I appreciated the quality of the photos Barry Giles took at Race City Motorsports Park because, as I told him, I recognized his vantage point and knew that almost all of them were taken to the west, into the sun. Amazing. I am looking into taking his course at S.A.I.T., and maybe a course on Photoshop, too.”
