The Puffin Pad
Posted July 16, 2010.
The Puffin Pad is a must-have accessory for “drive-by” nature photographers, wedding photographers and more. When shooting from the car with big glass, I have discovered that hand-held photography is not always a good idea; I have hurt my wrists and missed shots due to fatigue and camera movement. The Puffin Pad is a device made to fit over car door window openings, fence posts and more. It provides a cushion so that you can rest your lens comfortably when you are shooting without a tripod. Many people use beanbags for this purpose, however, I find that the Puffin Pad stays in place better on my car window and other items.
The Puffin Pad is made of durable automotive foam topped with a thin layer of soft memory foam that creates a nice cushion for the lens to sit on. When I tested the Puffin Pad, I felt safe resting my lens on it. The memory foam is a nice added touch because you don’t have to worry about the lens getting scratched. It stays in place nicely with just enough wiggle room to slightly tilt it back and forth. I love how lightweight the Puffin Pad is and it’s also small enough that it can fit in a camera bag. The base of the Puffin Pad has a cylindrical cut out so it can actually cradle a standard zoom lens, giving you extra protection.
Sometimes I spot the best shots of wildlife, landscapes, and other natural phenomenon while driving down the road, especially in Canada. If you find yourself shooting out your car window with big glass, the Puffin Pad is a great accessory to bring along with you. Just make sure that someone else is driving, so that you can focus on your photography instead of the road.
