The acclaimed Tamron 18-270mm VC ultra zoom for APS-C format DSLRs has reached an astonishing new level of compactness, performance, and speed with the addition of PZD (Piezo Drive), an innovative ultrasonic autofocus motor based on an advanced piezoelectric design. The result is a lens that's considerably lighter, and noticeably shorter and slimmer (filter diameter: 62mm) than any previous lens in its class, and provides faster, quieter auto-focusing.

Signature features that have made this amazingly versatile lens the world standard in its class have been retained. They include a 28-419mm equivalent (15X) zoom range, an improved, lightweight, compact Vibration Compensation (VC) system, macro focusing to 0.49m (19.3 inches) throughout, and, of course, superlative imaging performance.

Great Versatility, Kit Lens Upgrade

By: Marco
This is a very versatile lens, it's great for just leaving on your camera; it can cover nearly every focal length you could desire (Except for ultra wide and super telephoto). I would recommend picking up this lens with a Sony body as a starter. Better than the Sony 18-250 in my opinion, and cheaper!

No Zoom creep at all if you keep the lens at 18mm, making the zoom lock a bit pointless. Anything beyond that and the lens will tend to extend if pointed downwards.

Build quality is decent. The lens body is textured plastic with a metal mount, which keeps the lens very lightweight. The lens is also very compact, a lot smaller than I expected.
A plastic lens hood is included as well. My primes are the only lenses I own that are lighter. The 62mm filter size is the same as the Sony 18-250, I would recommend buying 77mm or larger filters and using step up rings.

Sharpness is average for a lens in this price range. It is significantly impacted due to the sheer range of focal lengths it can cover, but it is a tradeoff considering the versatility. Stopping down improves sharpness but in the long end, I found myself in the f9 - f11 range, which is a bit slow. Bokeh is quite nice as well. A fair amount of barrel distortion and vignetting as well but this can be easily corrected in post processing.

Autofocus is relatively fast, but a bit loud; so not the best for video. With manual focus I found the focus ring to be a bit loose, so it was hard to be accurate.

No optical stabilization in the Sony version, I found the in body stabilization to be insufficient at longer focal lengths. At 270mm you'll want lots of light for a higher shutter speed.

My favourite shots with this lens were macro shots of grass and bugs at around 240mm. With the long focal length and close focus distance, you can get DOF rivalling a f1.2.

All in all this is a great kit lens upgrade, better than the Sony 18-250. However as your photography improves, you might want to look elsewhere for better sharpness and low light performance.
