The Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 DC HSM is the first wide-angle to standard zoom lens to achieve a large aperture of 1.8. Designed specifically for APS-C sized sensors, the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 translates to 27mm-52.5mm on 35mm camera, and incorporates a wide glass molded aspherical lens with Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass to compensate for aberrations and curvature at the widest angle. It is ideal for landscapes, portraits, still life, snap shots, casual, and close-ups and the Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures smooth, fast and accurate autofocusing. Internal focusing and zooming allows for more usability and functionality, and the use of Thermally Composite Material (TSC) reduces size and weight but increases the lens durability. Its Global Vision design works with its compatibility with the Sigma USB dock for further customization, and a 9 blade rounded diaphragm also creates beautiful background blur.

The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function. By optimizing the AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved. Also, this lens offers full-time MF by rotating the focus ring of the lens while auto focusing. Without changing the AF/MF Focus Mode Switch, it allows faster focus adjustment.

Better than a prime

By: Marco
Best lens purchase I ever made. This lens is ridiculously good. I found it consistently performed better than my 35mm 1.8 prime. Its like having 17 primes in 1 lens! Be forewarned, this is a very heavy lens, nearly as heavy as the Zeiss 24-70 2.8, and it's fairly long as well.

The build quality is exceedingly good, nice machined metal and high quality plastic. The lens hood is also high quality plastic with a bit of rubber. The rubber grips feel nice and are large and easy to grab. The focus and zoom rings move very smoothly, so smoothly it's easy to brush past and change your focal length.

The autofocus is buttery smooth and silent. I found the focus to be a bit innacurate at times if using full scene or zone AF. Try to use spot AF or manual focus to get the best performance. Or you can use the USB dock to adjust focus as well. The focusing is all done internally. I'm not sure if the lens is weather sealed, but the fact that the lens doesn't extend will reduce the chance of dust entering.

The smallest aperture you'll get on the lens is f16, so I found myself using ND's a bit more often than my other lenses just to get the shutter speed down. Takes 72mm filters, but I'd buy 77mm+ filters and use a step up ring.

I found that this lens shines when you treat it like a manual focus prime. The 18-35mm limited reach will force you to move around almost as much as using a fixed prime, but you have the 18mm wide angle advantage. Set your focal length, and use the focus magnifier feature on your Sony camera to zoom on exactly what you want in focus. When you slow down and take the picture with manual focus, you'll get astounding shots. The colour is unbelievably good, sharpness is insane, and as good if not better than primes even wide open. Distortion and vignetting are kept to a minimum.

There is no lens on the market that gives us APS-C shooters an 18mm 1.8, let alone a zooming constant 1.8 from 18-35mm. I use it wide open quite frequently and get amazingly sharp pictures, even at 18mm. You will be astounded at the quality of pictures you will get from this lens. In my opinion, this is a must have lens for any Sony APS-C shooter. I would very very HIGHLY recommend it.
