Superb fast lens

By: maggie @POP Photography
I had been thinking about a 50mm lens for quite a while. I went back and forth between purchasing the 50mm 1.2 by Canon or the sigma art. With the sigma art, I absolutely love the build, the weight of the lens, the colours and the bokeh. Beautiful in every way. It;s really worth the cash, amazing fast glass!

Sigma 50mm 1.4 Canon Mount ART - AMAZING!

By: Mr. J.
Generally I would never write a review after just one day of shooting with a lens or camera, however my enthusiasm for this lens has thrown that timeline out the window.

The Sigma 50mm Art is in short a GREAT normal lens. It blows the other Canon lenses out of the water and has been compared favourably to the Zeiss/Otus offerings at considerably higher prices.

I use a Canon 6D and the DXO Mark review on this camera are very close to the 5D Mark III.

With a weight of 815 grams (1.8 lbs) it is not a light lens by any means but feels balanced and very solid on the 6D.

For a 50mm lens - the lack of distortion; minimal CA and Vignetting - and in particular...the sharpness across the frame wide open is better than any other 50mm lens out there other than the Zeiss/Otus and only just according to reviews.

The Sigma Art uses ring-type ultrasonic autofocus motor and in the few pictures I have taken thus is ultra quiet; quick (more camera limiting than lens) and with a full-time manual override - is very easy to use in the field. There is an internal focus design so no problem with filters.

What I have always liked about Sigma lenses is that a hood (petal type) and high quality case are included. (granted this is not a cheap lens and would have to be compared to Canon L lenses that would also include a case and hood)

Without any processing - the raw images out of the camera were outstanding....with beautiful bokeh at 1.4 and absolutely perfect at anything above 2.8. The Canon 1.4 just doesn't compare and wide-open, I would say this is better in performance than the Canon 1.2L - which is a great lens (I have used it but still prefer the Sigma Art along with being several hundred dollars cheaper!)

If you have used the Sigma 35mm Art have an idea of what this looks like and the quality to expect. it is almost identical in size and even a bit it is not an inconspicuous lens.

In short and without further testing.....the early in the field results are astounding and I feel like a kid in a candy store with this lens. I was looking at the 85mm 1.2 to go with my Canon 100 2.8L IS USM before this lens arrived....and I am glad I waited.

I have no doubt based on early professional reviews (I'm not!); the price; and from what I saw from pre-orders online - this may be the hottest lens of the year bar none!

Kit: 6D; 24-105L IS USM; Sigma 50mm 1.4 HSM ART; Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro; Canon 70-300 F/4-5.6L IS USM; Canon 40mm f/2.8 Pancake STM Lens
