Comfortable To Handle & Use

By: Carbonman
I started with ICL digital cameras about 2-1/2 years ago but have 40 years experience with 35mm and medium format film cameras. The first Olympus camera I bought was an E-M10 and loved the convenience and image quality but wanted a firmer grip on the camera. After picking up an E-M1 in a shop about 18 months ago, I knew it was the camera for me. Image quality is the same as the E-M10 but handling and the v.4 software really set this camera apart from almost every other camera in the marketplace.
I get the firm grip on my camera I wanted, added features like in-camera focus stacking, keystone, HDR and back button focus to make my shooting easier. Fast focus and dual stabilization with the 300mm Pro lens are nice bonuses, though it's not night & day between cameras.
The button layout is simple enough to remember; the dedicated HDR and AF buttons are perfect. The E-M1's viewfinder has the added resolution that my E-M10 lacks for my needs.
Startup time is very short and all functions engage quickly. I would prefer the on/off switch to be where the >.1/>.2 switch is for the back button. This would make picking up and turning on the camera a 1-handed operation.
The only physical failing with this cameras is the shortness of the body; I added an aftermarket ARCA style quick release plate so my little finger has somewhere to rest when holding the grip. A battery pack would have also done the job but I simply carry a spare battery in my bag and save the bulk in my case and further dent in my wallet.
All in all, I'm very happy I bought the E-M1 10 months ago and don't feel the need to hunt for 'the perfect camera' anymore. The 12-40 f2.8 is the perfect default lens for this camera and the other lenses in the Olympus m43 system make the E-M1 a highly portable package that can provide excellent images.
