Great Travel Camera

By: A.M.
I love this camera for travel. I can throw it in my bag and not worry about it and bring it everywhere with me. I don't have to worry about using it in the rain, I don't have to worry about dropping it, and it gives me great photos in a variety of conditions.

Low light situations are fairly grainy, but the flash and the fact I can pull it back and bounce it is a great feature and helps that situation. The fact of the matter is that I will never be happy quality-wise with anything that isn't my DSLR, but for travel and general use, I love this camera. I've had my fair share of small point and shoot cameras and none of them compare to the quality of this one.

It relieves the weight of carrying my large, heavy camera and lens all day long, and it shoots RAW which is great. I love that I can throw it on auto and get great images. I can pass it to a stranger to take a touristy snap shot of me and not have to teach them how to use it at all.

I've used it minimally under water but from what I've done, it never leaked during my time of using it. I have an extra O-ring for it that I purchased, and I grease the O-ring it came with regularly and have had no issues thus far.

All in all, it's a great camera for quality if you don't want to carry around the bulk of your DSLR and want a fairly hassle free camera companion to carry around in your bag.

A practical standpoint

By: Thomas
The AW1 had me frustrated as a long term DSLR user, overriding the manual controls to find the automatic settings took some getting used to. The manual is a little cryptic and doesn't cover the manual settings well.

Using the camera underwater is a bit tricky; a couple of suggestions, crank up the brightness and contrast on the display. Part of the camera's usage underwater isn't the fault of the camera, trying to photograph fish and turtles underwater in the surf would be difficult under any circumstances. Once I had cranked up the display settings it did make a large difference in my being able to get better pictures with the camera.

On the manual being cryptic, you can set the focus point to single point focus but the manual doesn't seem to tell you how to move the focus point if you want to change up the composition. It's accomplished by pushing the "OK" button then moving the selector.

I was worried initially about the lens being the weak point in the system as far as leaks go but Nikon seems to have that down well. I also after every trip, only three successful ones the fourth not so much, removed the lens and gasket and as the manual suggested cleaned and lubricated it before putting the lens on.

The only other "port" I utilized on these trips was the battery and memory card compartment. That's where the camera failed. The seal on the two other compartments are no where near as robust as the lens and really need to be beefed up.

I did my fourth snorkeling trip, after prepping the camera the previous day; cleaning and reseating the gasket, and checking the other compartments, in a reef area and stayed on the surface. Around five minutes into the swim the camera shut down and I wasn't able to get it to turn back on.

When I returned to my temporary abode I opened the camera up and started checking where the leak was. The lens and sensor maintained their integrity but the battery compartment was the weak link.

From a practical standpoint if you're looking for a camera to use for snorkeling this might not be the best choice. Also, the controls if you haven't spent a lot of time with them are too easy to change to something not suited to the task.

Picture quality above water was great for such a small sensor but I found more noise that I considered acceptable in the underwater shots.

AVOID - Not even water resistant.

By: Nature enthusiast
This camera takes great underwater photos but it is NOT water proof or even water resistant. Despite cleaning and siliconing the seals, after only about its fifth use in the waters around Hawaii (snorkeling not diving) it failed. The screen fogged and there was water in the battery compartment. It died and was deemed "uneconomical" to repair by Nikon. $800 down the drain.

I tried submersing it in dehydrated alcohol just to see if could be resurrected anyway. To my surprise, you can pour liquid right through the battery compartment into the screen and out the USB port and the flash housing. There are no internal seals and it is pretty much guaranteed to fail at some point.

I have 6 other cameras a compact underwater Canon and underwater Panasonic that have been adequate snorkeling cameras. They have not failed in over 20 uses. Never will I ever buy any Nikon product again.
