The Sigma APO 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM includes Optical Stablization (OS) which is critical to equipment sporting this focal range allowing for hand-held tele-photography and the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. Sigma's splash-proof feature is also included preventing dust and precipitation from getting inside the lens. One SLD and two FLD glass elements provides maximum correction of chromatic aberrations. The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, and the lens design incorporates an inner focusing and inner zooming system to ensure sharp images throughout the entire zoom range. Improved optical performance provides excellent correction of sagittal coma flare and ensures ultra-high resolution, comparable to a fixed focal length lens. The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor ensures quiet and high speed AF, while allowing full-time manual focus override.

A great versatile lens

By: Turbo
As a Nikon shooter I would have preferred the Nikkor 200-400F4, but the cost was just too prohibitive. Instead I bought this unit along with both the 1.4 and 2.0 Teleconverters. This provides me with 120-600mm F2.8-5.6 veribility. The 2.8 is great in the low light situations and I am very happy with the results. The lens is heavy as are all quality Tele-zooms. I like shooting the lens with a 2.0 TC with a minimum of a monopod and if there is time, a good sturdy tripod.
The lens works great and is very fast, adding the 1.4 slows the autofocus noticably, and with the 2.0 added you will only wish to try and capture movement of very slow moving targets, it is not an acceptable option for Birds in flight.
With the introduction of the "sport" model of this lens, this unit has also dropped about $400-600 in price, almost like getting the TC's for free.
I do not take extra precautions with my gear, this "pro" level lens deliveries from a durability perspective as well. I do not like the lens hood that is provided as it doesn't withstand the rigors of wildlife shooting, so get used to repairing it :(
I am not a technicrat so I cannot speak of Abhorations and the like, but I do love this lens.
